One of the questions I get asked most often before a trip to Morocco is, “What should I pack?” The good news is that packing for Morocco is easier than most people think. While the country offers a wide variety of climates and landscapes, a little planning will ensure you’re comfortable throughout your journey.

First, Dress for Comfort

The best advice I can give is this: wear what makes you comfortable.

There are no strict rules for tourists, and you’ll see visitors wearing everything from jeans and hiking pants to skirts and dresses. Personally, I enjoy wearing dresses and skirts, so I always pack at least one or two, along with comfortable pants for days when we’re exploring medinas, hiking, or spending long hours sightseeing.

Bring Comfortable Shoes

If I could recommend just one item to prioritize, it would be your shoes.

Morocco’s historic medinas are filled with uneven stone streets, stairs, and narrow alleyways. You’ll spend far more time walking than you probably expect.

Our personal packing list always includes:

  • A comfortable pair of slip-on sneakers
  • A second comfortable pair of flats or walking shoes
  • Lightweight slippers for relaxing in hotels or desert camps

9+ days is a long time to wear the same pair of shoes every day, and your feet will thank you for having options.

Prepare for a Wide Range of Temperatures

Morocco’s weather can vary dramatically—even during the same trip.

While weather is never guaranteed, in November, you can generally expect:

  • Marrakech daytime: temperatures in the 80s°F
  • Chefchaouen evenings: temperatures in the 40s°F
  • Sahara Desert nights: also dipping into the 40s°F

Rain is usually minimal during many travel seasons, but temperatures can easily swing 40 degrees between day and night.

For that reason, layering is your best friend.

I usually pack:

  • Short-sleeve shirts
  • A lightweight sweater or long-sleeve top for layering

With a few versatile layers, you’ll be comfortable whether you’re exploring bustling markets under the afternoon sun or watching the stars over the Sahara after sunset.

What Do Moroccans Wear?

Many travelers wonder if there’s a dress code in Morocco.

The answer is simple: there are no government or religious clothing requirements for visitors or residents. What people wear is based on personal preference, family traditions, and cultural norms.

For women, you’ll commonly see:

  • Many women wearing a hijab (headscarf)
  • Older women often pairing a hijab with a traditional caftan
  • Burkas are quite rare, though you may occasionally see one

For men, everyday clothing looks very familiar to what you’d see in the US or any other western country:

Simple choices like covering your shoulders, avoiding extremely revealing clothing, and wearing clothing that’s comfortable for walking will help you blend in while remaining respectful of local customs.
