Following the events of The Batman (2022), Oz Cobb, aka the Penguin, attempts to take over Gotham’s criminal underworld
From melted makeup to shooting in freezing temperatures, Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti discuss how they got into character during the production of “The Penguin.” Colin Farrell fought hard to get his version of The Penguin to smoke tobacco in The Batman (2022), but was unsuccessful. However, for his own series, the character is depicted as a casual tobacco user, with a preference for cigars.

The first episode is a direct continuation of Matt Reeves’ series
Appears in Graham Norton i gosti: Lady Gaga/Demi Moore/Colin Farrell/Richard Ayoade/Jack Savoretti (2024). Batman, and I imagine those who haven’t seen the latter will feel a little lost.
It also nicely recaptures the film’s aesthetic and somber tone, though the series has far more moments of sly frivolity than the movie does
But I watched The Batman a while back and this series did an admirable job of quickly reacquainting me with where the movie left off, and without bogging me down in a didactic recap. As in The Batman, Colin Farrell does an excellent job of portraying The Penguin as a stereotypical “streetwise” mobster: rude, profane, mercurial, and quick to violence; but also sly, crafty, and able to read people.
But so far he’s off to a great start
The character may have absolutely nothing to do with the comic book version, but he’s interesting in his own right. I’m skeptical about the series giving The Penguin a teenage sidekick; and I don’t know if The Penguin’s machinations will be enough to sustain an entire season.
